WHAT IS TIZMORET?

Tizmoret is Queens College Hillel’s professional Jewish a cappella group.

Directed by Daniel Henkin since 1996, this nationally-acclaimed group draws singers from throughout the New York City area, and continues to take Jewish collegiate a cappella to the next level, performing classic Jewish melodies, American pop music and contemporary Israeli tunes across the country!

And the word “Tizmoret” (pronounced teez-MOH-ret) is the Hebrew word for band or orchestra—makes sense, right?

Tizmoret has produced eight full-length albums as well as two EPs. They have performed for countless B’nei-Mitzvot and synagogues, college campuses, at Merkin Hall, Symphony Space, and various music festivals across the Eastern United States. Tizmoret won the 5th annual Long Island College A Cappella Challenge in 2010, won Kol HaOlam (the national Jewish collegiate a cappella competition) in 2011, 2012, and 2015, won the first annual Philadelphia Jewish Collegiate A Cappella Competition in 2017, and competed in the 2017 and 2019 International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA), and the 2024 NY Regional Harmony Sweepstakes. They annually tour the east coast and beyond, and have even performed in Italy at a New Year’s party as well as at the annual White House Hanukkah party in 2014.

SOPRANOS

  • Rena Angel is a student at Sarah Lawrence University. She loves to read, write, paint, and sing! Her favorite singers are Lana Del Rey and Kurt Cobain. She has a twin sister and is hoping to pursue a degree in creative writing #girlboss. In high school she was president of her choir and chamber choir, and she loves a cappella!

  • Talia Leifer is a sophomore at Macaulay Honors College at Hunter and is returning for her second year in Tizmoret! Both of her parents are singers, so she has been singing her entire life. She took on musical theatre growing up but recently has also started songwriting. Talia resides mostly in Great Neck, Long Island, and in her free time, she likes to re-watch Friends and New Girl (or just enjoy a nice nap). She survives on iced coffee—you’ll rarely see her in the morning without one! Talia is a classically-trained singer, and was the president of her high school choir/chamber choir under the rule of none other than Daniel Henkin himself. She is planning on majoring in psychology with a minor in music. She is super excited to continue her Tizmoret journey!!!

  • Fanni Tábori is a sophomore at Yeshiva University studying Political Science and History in the pre-law department. She grew up in Budapest, Hungary, which has allowed her to travel around Europe and experience all its different cultures. She has always had a strong passion for music, especially by singing and playing instruments (violin, piano and flute!). After graduating college, Fanni plans to attend law school, hoping to become a lawyer one day!

  • Jacqueline Halabi is a freshman in Macaulay Honors College at Baruch. She began singing at six years old and her favorite musical genres are classic rock and indie. She’s currently studying real estate and aspires to be a musical business woman!

  • Sophia Salem is a freshman student in the Scholars Program at Brooklyn College, whose love for music was born with her. Sophia is a self-taught vocalist, but beyond that, she plays the piano! Sophia has perfect pitch, has learned theory and trained via Suzuki method for twelve years, and has been freelancing/composing for three. Recently, Sophia debuted as an artist, releasing her first song, “a lament to friendship (void)”, and hopes to release more in due time!

ALTOS

  • Ariel Creditor is a senior at Queens College, studying art history and Jewish studies. When she’s not singing with the group, she can usually be found singing to herself. Ariel spends most of her time in QC Hillel, exploring the different museums in NYC, and spending time with friends. She is so excited to continue her Tiz journey!

  • Tali Isaacs is a second-year member of Tizmoret. She studies English and Political Science at Stern College for Women, and hopes to be a lawyer one day! In her spare time she likes to chill with friends, write, and hang out with her bunny.

  • Adi Mayer is a recent Barnard graduate currently preparing applications to law school while working as a paralegal at Davis Polk & Wardwell. With family origins in Israel, Adi loves expressing herself through music and surrounding herself with a powerful Jewish community. For these reasons, she joined Tizmoret! Adi has been singing since a young age, taking vocal lessons and participating in various choirs throughout her life. She also plays the guitar and loves to dance!

  • Eliana Birman is a freshman at Barnard College studying Cognitive Science, and this is her first year in Tizmoret! She is from Teaneck, NJ (claaaaassic). Her free time is spent singing, writing, eating GF/DF goodies, and learning random facts about topics that don’t mean anything to most people. Eliana has always LOVED Jewish music and cannot wait for the journey Tizmoret will take her on!

TENORS

  • Eli Deutsch is a recent graduate from Macaulay Honors College at Baruch, and is currently working as an EMT while preparing his applications to medical school. He has been singing all his life, starting out in New York Boys Choir during elementary and middle school, and then joining his high school’s a cappella group, Harmonidies. This is his third year in Tizmoret and he is very excited to see what the year brings. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, watching Netflix, and hanging out with friends!

  • Noam Weinstock lives in Marine Park in Brooklyn so he calls himself a coastal boy, although studies show he is not. He spends a healthy amount of time at Brooklyn College, where, as a part of the Macaulay program, he studies Applied Math and Theatre/Acting—things he does because, as he explains to all inquirers, he (shrugs) “likes them.” Free time in his universe is usually spent playing drums on anything he can find, speaking in different accents for still no good reason, tossing items around like frisbees, and making google sheets for things that never needed them. When he is not singing with his Tizmoret family, he loves listening to the best music in the world—listen with him here! He is interested in everything and wants to learn more, so come on over and be a friend!

  • Matan Chananashvili is a graduate from Rutgers University where he studied the art of maths. He is currently working as an actuary. What is that? Good question. He enjoys doing fun math problems and logic puzzles, spending time with his family and friends, learning, exploring random things, anything with music, and especially singing!

  • Jacob Nussbaum is a freshman at New York City College of Technology. He found his love for music when he joined the Yeshivah of Flatbush high school chamber choir, where he learned music theory and how to sing with others. During his senior year, he started learning how to produce music, and he has been learning ever since!

BASSES

  • Eitan Davidovics comes all the way from Teaneck, NJ (he knows, he feels bad too). Before joining Tiz, he only ever did high school choir, but he always felt he had a higher purpose. He is very happy to now put his bass voice to good use with many do-ba-doos, dm-dm-dms, and hums. Currently a college senior, he is going for a classics degree. He also enjoys long walks on the beach and comedy movies.

  • Itai Segev recently graduated from American University, where he completed a Masters in Financial Economics, and is now working in the software sales industry at Adobe. He is from Newton, MA and just moved to NYC in July of 2023. Itai has been singing since he was 13 when he started playing guitar, and found his passion for a cappella in high school and college. In his free time, he is a die-hard Boston sports fan, loves hanging out with friends, and is always trying new foods and coffee shops. Any recs? Let him know!
